Benefits of Pelvic Steaming

You may have heard of pelvic steaming through wellness circles — or more recently, pop culture. Although pelvic steaming has been in the spotlight, in reality it’s an ancient ritual that spans many cultures and is used by women around the world as a powerful healing and restorative practice.

If you’re not entirely sure of the definition of a pelvic steam, at its core, it's a restorative, safe, and comfortable ritual that can connect, balance, and heal the feminine cycles. The practice itself involves allowing herbal infused steam to gently nourish and tonify the womb and walls of the vagina.

There are many benefits of pelvic steaming and it has been used as a form of holistic self-care and healing for challenges related to PMS relief, postpartum, or a general sense of relaxation and grounding. Many wellness practitioners and clinics are beginning to include pelvic steams as part of their offering, and if there is a trusted provider in your area, this is an excellent choice. However, steaming can also be done at home and many women prefer the intimacy and privacy of performing this ritual at home. As part of our mission to support modern women with ancient rituals, we recently launched our own Womb Protector™ pelvic steaming herb blend to help more women connect to the wisdom of their feminine body.

How Pelvic Steaming Works

The RitualThe first step is to choose a pot that acts as a sacred container for the ritual. Although any type of pot is sufficient, we suggest finding a pot that feels special and if possible, is made of an earth element such as clay. You’ll also want to find a stool that can provide a comfortable seat for your steam and from a non-toxic, formaldehyde-free material. Our Womb Protector™ Ritual Bundle is a great option if you’re searching for these items. To Prepare

  1. Add one sachet of our Womb Protector™ pelvic steaming herb blend to a pot of water and bring to a rolling boil.
  2. Remove pot from heat, cover with lid, and place under THE FULLEST Pelvic Steaming Stool.
  3. Undress from the waist down, remove the pot's lid, and gently sit on the stool.
  4. Use a blanket made from natural fibers (if possible) and create a cozy tent around your lower body and the stool to keep the steam from escaping.
  5. Once you feel the herbal steam cool, your healing ritual is complete.

The HerbsHerbs are often used in combination with the steam to increase the benefits of the steam process. For centuries, women have conversed and studied the power of plants to support the mental, physical, and emotional female bodies. For your pelvic steam, you can create your own blend intuitively, or support yourself with custom blends specifically for steaming. Our custom blend has been formulated with plant extracts that have been used specifically in herbalism, naturopath, and Ayurveda for womb connection and healing.

  • Release and relaxation herbs: lavender, rose, chamomile, motherwort, and calendula. They can all also promote a general sense of wellbeing, relaxation, and feeling grounded. Lavender also relaxes nerves and muscles.
  • Nourishing and strengthening herbs: red raspberry leaf and nettles. Red raspberry leaf helps strengthen and tone the uterus and pelvic lining.

Benefits & Effects

Physical Imbalances & General Cleansing First and foremost, pelvic steaming is a natural way to cleanse the entire vaginal area, but there are many additional physical health benefits.

Vaginal steaming may help cleanse the uterine lining, improve circulation, balance pH levels, and nourish vaginal tissue. It may also help with yeast/bacterial infections and vaginal dryness.

The reason for this is that the mechanisms of pelvic steaming allow the body to have more support to perform its own natural processes.Cycle HealingPelvic steaming can also improve many symptoms that accompany a woman’s menstrual cycle.

It can help regulate an irregular cycle, balance out heavy or very light levels of bleeding, and improve cramps.

To help balance menstrual irregularities over time, it’s suggested to do vaginal steaming once in the week before your cycle starts and once the week after it finishes.Fertility, Pre, and PostpartumThere are some suggestions that pelvic steaming can aid in fertility as the steam is bringing circulation, energy, and activity back into the womb. It is also incredibly popular in postpartum care and is utilized as a natural part of postpartum recovery practices all over the world. Our founder discovered this to be a very profound practice in her own postpartum journey and it aided her greatly in her physical and emotional restoration and rebalancing.

Pelvic steaming is said to help heal uterine prolapse, tears or scars, tone the reproductive system, and can also help to improve circulation and clear out any stagnant energy.

As this is quite a strenuous time on the body, it is best to seek the advice of a doula, midwife, or any womb healer on the best steam and process for your unique needs.Grounding, Emotional Release, and CreativityAncient cultures believe that our energetic sacral chakra and physical womb is the ultimate portal of creativity. This doesn’t refer to simply the physical place that life is born but also our ideas, passions, and even relationships. Unfortunately, over time and due to cultural conditioning, we have become less connected to this part of ourselves at best, and at worst feel shame, pain, and trauma for our sexual and creative aspects. Taking the time to give this part of your being a sacred ritual begins to heal and emotional trauma associated with these energies and clear out stuck and stagnant energy allowing you to move forward from an empowered place. What You Can Expect After a Pelvic SteamAfter your steam, you should typically feel quite relaxed. Some say they may feel more emotional than normal after, as the steam is said to clear out and release old energies and emotions in addition to its other benefits. When Not to Pelvic SteamPelvic steaming can be an excellent addition to your self care practice, and it is typically suggested to be done twice a month. Although, you should not practice pelvic steaming during your period or if you are pregnant.Shop Womb Protector™ here.
