Finally, a Plant-Based Keto Diet
My integrative focus is on epigenetics and personalized medicine and you won’t ever hear me promoting fad diets or big, generalized health advice for the masses. Instead, I’ll carefully review your genetics, gut microbiome, and functional lab information before telling you what types of foods you should or shouldn’t be eating. And when it comes to dietary books I’m very wary of recommending any, as most are very single-minded.Dr. Will Cole’s debut book, Ketotarian, however, is an exception I recommend everyone to pick up. He’s not telling us to shovel meat and dairy down our throats to reach a ketogenic state, rather he’s taking the best of ketogenesis and applying it to an abundant, mostly plant-based diet. So what makes this book so different from other fad diet books? The answer is simple. He isn’t just writing about a fad -- he’s introducing his readers to a new lifestyle entirely. It’s important to make a few distinctions before you get reading (or eating)...Our brains have been trained to see the words “burn fat” and assume it follows the notion that we need to lose weight... but this is not necessarily the takeaway for Dr. Cole. He explains that when we burn fat, we feed our brains. We burn fat for daily focus, for energy, to prevent Alzheimer’s, and to regulate hormones optimally. We burn fat to upgrade our metabolism, and, as a result, crush cravings and curb inflammation. (If optimizing weight, upgrading your autoimmunity, or regulating endocrine activity is a health goal for you, then this book is undoubtedly for you.) Dr. Cole reinforces our need to heal our digestions to realize these wellness goals. Only when we’ve dialed in our own personalized version of the ketotarian lifestyle can we heal our detox pathways.
Ketotarian combines years of evidence-based research that is accurately supported and presented clearly for readers to truly absorb. It strongly points out how digestion is the cornerstone of our wellness and offers insight that both newbies and seasoned health-foodies can incorporate into their daily routines.
While adopting a ketotarian lifestyle may sound radical, Dr. Cole writes to his audience in a way that is akin to a friendly teacher who wants to keep you on your toes -- including tips on how to troubleshoot so you can reach your goals as you transition towards this new lifestyle. The book is full of supportive, first person narratives to make a human connection that will better help you develop a personal action plan. If you’re leaning into a more intuitive, personalized dietary lifestyle and need more clues along the way, definitely pick up a copy of Ketotarian to help you on your mindful eating journey!
