THE FULLEST January Scopes

January — and the New Year! — is off to a slow start, with Mars and Mercury Retrograde until the 12th and 18th, respectively. The Sun will remain in Capricorn until the 20th when it enters Aquarius, followed by the New Moon on the 21st and Uranus (Aquarius's Ruler) Direct on the 22nd. At that point, all the planets will be Direct, giving us ample wind under our sails. It would be fair to say that, energetically speaking, this New Year really begins later in the month. In the Jewish tradition, the New Year, Rosh Hashanah, is followed by "10 days of Awe," which completes with Yom Kippur, a day of atonement and fasting. The 10-day period is one of reflection and repentance, including Erev Yom Kippur, the day before Yom Kippur, when we ask those we've wronged for forgiveness.2023's start, one could say, has a similar trajectory in terms of astrology. We look backwards so we may move forward more wholeheartedly and more integrated. It's a beautiful reminder of time and the gifts of its passage. Both Capricorn and Aquarius are ruled by Saturn, otherwise known as Father Time. Saturn governs structure, establishment, and tradition. Without Saturn, we have no sense of order, place, or markers. Saturn reminds us that personal responsibility is necessary for maturation, true adulthood and self-realization. In Capricorn, it manifests in the material world, and Aquarius, the ether. The end of January finds us having explored both, more deeply rooted in our goals and more expanded in our outlook. This month is a full spectrum journey from the sensitive, caring Cancer Full Moon to the far-reaching New Moon in Aquarius.

For this month and 2023, more broadly, the word is HUMANITY, the goodwill towards others, benevolence and forgiveness, qualities needed now more than ever.

Humanity / hyoo͞-măn′ĭ-tē (noun)

  1. Humans considered as a group; the human race.
  2. The condition or quality of being human.
  3. The quality of being humane; benevolence.

Full Moon in Cancer, January 6, 3:08 pm PST

This Full Moon is ripe with nostalgia, with Mercury Retrograde heavily involved. Cancer craves the familiar security - a sense of home. We may find ourselves especially tender or emotional. Cancer is the emotional glue, the aspects and relationships in our lives not easily untethered. The more grace we have - for ourselves and others- the more compassionate and humane we become. It's so easy to get lost in the noise. Cancer brings us back home.

New Moon in Aquarius, January 21, 12:53 pm PST

This New Moon is both deep and expansive, a premonition of what's to come once Pluto, planet of transformation, begins its transition into Aquarius. There's a lot of air here; Communication is free-flowing and expressive. We're interested and interesting, ready to engage with others, but the shadow side of social media may have us exploring the impacts of group think. Aquarius is paradoxical. It's both highly individualistic and collectivist. We're planting seeds and setting future intentions, specifically our relationship to technology.

January Cosmic Rx: Slow Down

With many planets in retrograde at the beginning of the month, the astrology is clear about slowing down. Rather than rush into 2023 with an ambitious list of to-do's, savor these first few weeks to refine your dreams and plans for the year ahead. May we suggest doing so over our Slow Down™ barberry saffron beauty jam? We love to liberally spread this healing and delicious balm over a thick slice of toast and journal our thoughts and intentions for the day in front of us.Danielle Beinstein is a psychological and intuitive astrologer based in Nashville.
