Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids with Dr. Laura Markham

Today, we welcome Dr. Laura Markham, author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How To Stop Yelling and Start Connecting. Dr. Laura Markham earned her PhD in clinical psychology at Columbia University and has worked as a parenting coach with countless families across the world.

When it comes to parenting in the modern age, there are so many voices. It can make it hard to know whose advice to listen to and can also make you question your own parenting abilities. For these reasons and a million more, it was an honor to be able to pick the brain of one of childcare’s wisest and (most nurturing) voices.

This episode takes a slightly different format in that Nikki shares some of her own parenting challenges as case studies, and Dr. Laura models some potential responses. Even though the specific examples may not be pertinent to your child, Dr. Laura is able to use them as a way to explain the universal themes of sibling envy, singular versus multiple perspectives, and empathy development. Dr. Laura also explains the different stages of a child’s brain development and in doing so, provides incredible insight about the level of understanding your child is able to receive (physiologically, let alone psychologically).

They also touch on the importance of parent self-care, generational patterns, and the importance of connection before correction.

If you have kids, are expecting, or plan to become a parent at some point in the future, this is such an educational episode that’ll arm you with real-world techniques to create a happy family life for your kids and yourself.
