Pain With a Purpose: What Trauma Can Teach Us

Today’s guest, Kimberly Johnson, is a sexological bodyworker, somatic experiencing practitioner, yoga teacher, postpartum advocate, and single mom. She joins the podcast to remind us of the immense wisdom held in our physiology. Learning to listen to the messages of the body, especially those more uncomfortable messages, is a gift that can reveal to us our immense power and capabilities as women. However, for many of us, who have been taught to intellectualize our feeling states; reconnecting with the body is a process that must be remembered and cultivated.Often it takes an intense physical experience to realize our body is trying to communicate with us. For many women, one such experience is birth. Although this experience is used in this episode to highlight a powerful path of bodily reconnection, it is by no means the only experience. However, it does clearly illustrate many of the reasons we’ve lost touch with our human “animal” self — namely, a cultural and medical system that has been built on years of patriarchy.Trauma is a part of the human experience. However, the issue arises when we hold onto our trauma and do not process or metabolize the emotions out of our physical form. Learning to understand our flight, freeze, or fight response as well as the areas of our bodies that hold our these emotions can help us to move forward with our lives. This is an episode full of powerful insights relatable to every modern body.
