Anit Hora

Anit Hora is the founder of luxury, vegan apothecary line, Mullein & Sparrow. Born in Bombay, and now based in Brooklyn, Anita spent time backpacking throughout South America after leaving a stressful career in fashion, and ultimately returned to New York to focus on the Ayurvedic principles she grew up on. She enrolled at the Aveda Institute to learn more about holisticism and herbalism whilst simultaneously studying to become a yoga teacher and creating her brand. Her products are now carried at Anthropologie, Birchbox and various local retailers across the US. We caught up with the entrepreneur to ask her to share the seven things she’s most lovin’ on currently. This is what she said:1 | Juliette de Baïracli Levy -- Juliette was an English woman in the 1940’s who, very much inspired by the nomadic lifestyle of the gypsies, studied herbalism and went on to pave the way in holistic veterinary medicine. Whenever I feel like the city is too much, I love reading her books. I feel like they bring me back to simpler times, and I love living out my wanderlust through her writing.2 | Dr. Vasant Lad -- The director of the Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico, he’s an Ayurveda guru and a brilliant, brilliant man. 3 | Flying Bird Botanicals -- I adore their blends of organic, ethically-crafted tea. I love supporting other small businesses, especially those like Mullein & Sparrow that value community and quality. We are the ones who are going to affect powerful change in the world.  4 | NPR podcasts, How I Built This and On Being -- I can’t emphasize enough how much I am inspired by these two podcasts, the first for business and the second for spiritual growth. In How I Built This, Guy Raz interviews an array of innovators, entrepreneurs and idealists, and I always find it amazing to learn what each has to share about their triumphs and tribulations, both in business and in their personal lives. In On Being, Krista Tippett and her guests touch on everything from actual faith to civil rights and the state of the world today. They are perfect listens during the workday.  5 | Travel and languages -- Whenever I travel, I am obsessed with having a more authentic experience. I want to be able to chat with locals and have a ‘real’ adventure. Being alone and traveling helps me figure out who I really am. 6 | Catbird -- It’s one of the most beautiful stores… and they just so happen to carry us! Whenever I walk in, seeing their delicate, gorgeously curated pieces, I feel like I am in a really special place. When I was young with no money and just starting my business, I would walk in and buy something small, like a bar of soap or something. The wrapping, the beauty, the simple luxury of it all, made me feel like I had this treasure. Sometimes it’s the little things that matter the most. 7 | My two grandfathers -- Both were entrepreneurs and started their businesses right after the Partition, which was a really hard time for India. They each became very successful, and thinking of them always reminds me that there is no struggle you can’t overcome.
