Underwear Hacks Every Grown-Ass Woman Needs To Know

Beaches, lake life, ice cream, sunscreen, bikinis and sand. August in Maine -- where I live -- is known to be so enchanting that sometimes an unsuspecting tourist will make the decision to move here full time based on just a few summer days. (As the story goes, they are often taken aback by the length and gloom of winter.) But every summer, sure enough, it happens again and again -- we forget the winters, and are lulled into staying by the beauty of those sweet summer days.Even if you love the heat, it’s best to dress for the temperature so as to stay cool and comfortable. For me, that means breathable cotton undies and wireless bras from our line of summer shades in organic cotton, plus some lightweight tees and cotton sundresses. Here are my tips for staying cool and dry in that summer sunshine:

Let’s Talk Underwear

I find cotton fabrics to be more breathable and they tend to stay fresh-smelling longer than synthetics. (I prefer to avoid synthetics in general.) Summer is a great time to try a slightly fuller coverage undie -- like a hipster or boyshort -- and pair it with a short sundress.Thongs are ever popular with white jeans or light colored dresses. Just remember, it’s probably best to put them away for your workout and choose a fuller coverage bikini style. One of my favorite summer looks is a pretty-color bra or bralette strap peeking out from a loose t-shirt or tank. In the hot weather, it’s nice to coordinate your bra with your outerwear since it might show a little. It’s also really important to make sure things fit right and aren’t too tight. Think easy and breezy. I always prefer wireless styles. For sleeping, consider going sans underwear at night to stay cooler. But if you need to feel covered up, try a boxer style that fits a little looser. Pair with a pretty tank or coordinating tee and *tada* -- loungewear.

Think Minimal

Hot summer days are also an excellent time to really pare down your wardrobe and stick to the basics. When we travel in the summer I like to see how little I can pack, knowing at the very least, I won’t be cold. One of the other things that’s nice to do at least once a year is sort through your lingerie drawer and let go any of the items that you haven’t worn in the past few months. Because these objects are small we tend to hold on to pieces that really should have been discarded a while ago, but I can tell you: it’s refreshing to know that when you open up your undies drawer you’ll find only those pieces that you absolutely love and feel good in.I organize my wardrobe by color and tend to focus on just a few shades at a time. This summer I’ve been wearing almost exclusively white and dove gray, with some touches of melon, citrus and beige. It keeps packing for weekend trips super simple, and every time I look at my closet I feel soothed by the soft and fresh colors I see.  *Brook DeLorme is the founder of Brook There!
