Kacie Carter

Kacie Carter is co-owner of Echo Park’s Honey Hi. She became my BFF when she captioned this picture we took when we featured Honey Hi last year. She’s an absolute gem. If you haven’t been to her restaurant, then you need to rethink your priorities. If The Oregon Trail was relevant today, Honey Hi is where all the wagons would be heading.  Working in the food industry is anything but glamorous. But somehow, Kacie and her crew make it seem like they’re having the time of their lives and truly doing the work they love. Subsequently, it comes through in their food, which is totally next level, like: you-have-to-cater-my-wedding-which-will-probably-never-happen-but-maybe-I’ll-marry-this-jade-rice-bowl level. We got to giggle with Kacie over like 300 different plates of food (that’s how you do at Honey Hi) and asked her to share with us what’s really making her tick...1 | Triphala powder -- Disclaimer: this stuff tastes absolutely disgusting. Seriously. Triphala is a blend of three super bitter medicinal plants traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. I choke it down by mixing it with Vitamineral Greens to mask the taste. But... bitter foods are known as cholagogues, meaning that they stimulate your liver and gallbladder to increase bile flow -- in turn, this helps you better digest fats and the nutrients found in your food and stimulate liver secretions, all of which are helpful for increased digestion and detoxification. Triphala is a powerful liver cleanser and I take it right before I go to sleep -- when your liver is the most active.2 | My Braggart Sven kitchen clogs -- These chef wooden clogs are made of French leather and are my best friends. I’ve even been known to wear them out after work on occasion!3 | My Studiopatró black apron -- These aprons are made from beautiful, soft crinkly linen, and have a handy little towel/sharpie loop. Stains come out easily!4 | Buffered Magnesium Chelate by Designs for Health -- I cannot live without magnesium. It helps me relax at night before bed and is also a powerful digestive regulator when taken regularly. Buffered Magnesium Chelate seems to have a better absorption rate for increasing magnesium stores which is helpful for anxiety, among many other things.5 | Noto Botanics Deep Serum -- I don’t use lotions on my face anymore -- just oils. Oils have really transformed and cleared my skin. This serum by my friend, Gloria Noto is hydrating, brilliant and beautiful. 6 | Tailored Carhartt’s -- I order giant worn-in paint-splattered men’s vintage Carhartt work pants off Etsy for 30 bucks and then have my dry cleaner tailor them to fit me. They’ve become my uniform of sorts. 7 | Glutathione injections -- Glutathione is one of the most powerful antioxidants in the human body and is imperative for proper Phase II liver detoxification. I have dealt with a number of health issues over the last few years (Lyme disease, mold poisoning, candida, among others), all of which have been super challenging for my body’s internal detoxification system. Taking liposomal glutathione helps (I like Bulletproof brand) but I go to a functional medicine doctor about once a month and get glutathione injections directly. I seriously feel like a new person afterwards. I have been getting these regularly over the last three years and credit a lot of my healing to the increased overall support of glutathione.
