Foodies Gone Wild: Cabo’s Best Farm To Table Restaurant

If the last time you went to Cabo was the Spring Break you graduated high school, it’s about time you give it another go. Just a two-hour flight from LAX, the top party destination has become so much more than a Girls-Gone-Wild episode. In addition to its beautiful beaches, warm climate, and margarita-drenched all-inclusive resorts, it offers Instagram-worthy hikes, perfect waves for surfers, and a certain 10-acre organic farm that has become a must-see for foodies and adventurers throughout the world—and a place the lovely Jessica Alba enjoys ringing in the New Year.Surprised at that last statement? For those of you who didn’t quite peg Ms. Alba as a farm girl, know that this particular farm is no ordinary farm. Flora Farms, with it’s whimsical ambiance and rustic decor is bringing classy, with a dollop of charm, back to Cabo.Located in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains in San Jose del Cabo (often referred to as Cabo San Lucas’ “more elegant twin sister”) Flora Farms is about a 20-mile drive from the flip-flop and Corona-covered streets of downtown Cabo. Established in 1996, the farm’s produce is pesticide free and genetically modified seeds aren’t used on the more than 100 types of fruits, vegetables, and herbs grown onsite. All of the farms production goes to local consumption whether that be in their restaurant, grocery store, or private living community.Flora’s Field Kitchen is the farm’s famed intimate farm-to-table restaurant where the menu changes along with the seasonal crops. Sitting pretty on the top of most “Best of Cabo” lists, it’s truly fine dining at its best. USA Today’s 10 Best have featured it in several of their categories including ‘Best Outdoor Restaurants,’ ‘Most Romantic,’ and ‘Healthiest Menus.’ The outside establishment is a perfect setting for special events, weddings, or just a nice dinner with loved ones or friends. The vibe is upbeat and dancing is common with live music occurring most nights. Be on the lookout for the aptly nicknamed “Jazz Cats”—a family of nocturnal and shy raccoon’s who dwell in the trees until they hear the smooth wailings of jazz and descend from their homes for front row seats to the performance! As you can tell, nights are extremely popular so reservations are recommended. At the quaint Flora’s Grocery, instead of shopping carts patrons carry baskets as they survey the handpicked harvest. Anything that’s in season at the farm will be at the grocery from bright flowers to ripe fruits to pickled vegetables. The bakery is stocked with delicacies such as fresh baked Pain a l’Ancienne baguettes and pre-packaged meals in case a picnic is calling your name. The nearby Farm Bar features everything from specialty drinks like Lavender Martinis to shots of Mezcal and an expansive champagne, wine and beer menu. Need to shop? There’s a locally-crafted jewelry store, a body shop, wine cellar, and specialty boutiques to stop in for a new dress or a little fiesta trinket to bring home to your casa.The farm’s Culinary Cottages are a community of 10 luxury-designed homes located right there in the midst of it all. Cottage owners have special farm perks like access to a private community pool, a filtered swimming pond, a yoga studio, and a pristine bocce ball court. These rare properties are few and hard to come by as you have to be summoned by special invitation in order to purchase. You can however, stay at one through Airbnb for a mere $995 a night.So unless you can fork out that kind of cash or are lucky enough to get ahold of one of those golden tickets—one attached to a hefty trust fund—you’re probably just going to have to keep coming back.
