The Sound of Your Inner Voice Might Surprise You

Have you noticed how we’re always avoiding our heart, hunching over and retreating to our heads? It’s because it has the answers. But see, the heart isn’t interested in mortgages or 401ks or what everyone else will think at Thanksgiving. The heart has an agenda all its own. And it’s messy, not exactly Instagrammable stuff. How did we get here? So far away from the very organ that gives us life? So far from ourselves?Likely, it started when we were children.Lately, I’ve been thinking of children and the way they befriend each other. They’re not interested in status or accomplishment. They’re not interested in where they come from or the size of their homes. They’re drawn to each other because of something much simpler: energetic connection. As children, we know. We’re attuned, intuitively tapped in. Then we hear the adults around us and in an effort to secure their love, forget the sound of our own inner voice. We think renewal is about radical change, about starting over, because we’re forever in search of who we’ve lost inside, what’s been drowned out by the noise and opinions of others, by how we’d like to be perceived and received..But the heart always knows, because its yearnings are perennially innocent and pure. We just have to do some unpacking to get there. How do we do this? Try asking yourself some of the following questions:

  1. Is there an age that you remember feeling free, unencumbered?
  2. Can you see yourself at that age?
  3. What are you doing? Wearing? Where are you?
  4. Can you talk to her? Ask her to walk over to you? (Note that she may be very resistant.)
  5. Can you bridge the divide between you?
  6. Can you dialogue with her? Can you begin to earn her trust?

The more we do this, the more we engage and re-integrate our inner child into our lives, the healthier we are. Our inner children are forever begging to be liberated. And it’s up to us to set them free.In doing so, we renew ourselves.Artwork by Michelle Favin of Whys LA for Poppy & Seed. Connect with her @whyslosangeles.
