Ending Self-Sabotage
“Self-sabotage is when we say we want something and then go about making sure it doesn't happen.”
- Alyce P. Cornyn-Selby
Self-sabotage comes in many forms and sometimes it’s hard to spot. It commonly shows up as procrastination, comfort eating, self-medicating, dodging emotions, extreme humility, or acting impulsively. We all have ways we self-sabotage. To clear those patterns, it’s most helpful for us to identify the fears and beliefs at the root of the sabotage. For most of us, self-sabotage comes down to a primitive response to the unknown—a fear of change. We have certain ideas and beliefs about who we are, what we’re capable of, what we’re worthy of, etc. When we grow or step out of those beliefs, self-sabotage sometimes shows up to pull us back into our familiar, safe comfort zone. Instead of beating yourself up over the self-sabotaging, you can see it as a sign that you’re growing out of your comfort zone! Then use tools like tapping and meditation to abate the fear and end old self-sabotaging ways.
